With the entire world, it would seem, speculating over just who the next Doctor Who will be, one of the names that has been linked to the iconic role has laughed off the very suggestion!

Ever since current Time Lord, Matt Smith, announced his decision to bow out of the famous role during this year’s Christmas Special, rumours about just who would be taking the baton from him have been circulating more ferociously than wild fire.

One suggestion, in particular, seems to be the most prominent on everyone’s lips, despite the fact that the BBC has publicly denied it, and that is that the 12th Doctor will in fact be a woman.

Since the rumour began a few female names have been thrown into the ring including former Time Lord companion Billie Piper, Dame Helen Mirren and, most surprisingly, Michael Jackson’s 15 year old daughter, Paris.

But, as far as one of the leading ladies considered a contender in one of the biggest races of the year, Miranda Hart, is concerned, it is all nonsense, where she is concerned anyway!

Call The Midwife

The comedienne and Call The Midwife star has found herself one of fans firm favourite ladies to fill Smith’s shoes since the gender rumours began, but insists she has not been approached, and finds the whole situation rather funny!

When asked if the rumours were true in a recent heat magazine interview, the stand-up quipped:

“Are you serious? That’s hilarious. I’m just surprised constantly by my popularity, let alone the fact people want me to be Doctor Who.”

And it would seem that even if she were approached she is unlikely to accept the role, as the show scares her:

“I started watching some recently on my own and I got scared. I had to watch it in the daytime – I’m pathetic.

“I might be all right if I’m in it though, and don’t have to watch it.”

The BBC has said that an announcement will be made next month revealing the new Doctor, but insists that no decision has been made yet and that the hunt is very much still on.

But, if Arthur Darvil has his way it will be Dame Helen Mirren who takes the legendary Tardis helm, despite the BBC having ruled out a female to play the role, worrying it will cause awkward conversations between its younger viewers and their parents should the Time Lord wear high heels all of a sudden.

The former companion, who played Rory Williams until last year, said of the Oscar winning actress, who recently declared that it was “absolutely time” for a woman to play the Doctor, to Anglophenia:

“I suppose it could be a woman. I don’t know. I think it is a male part, though I think it’s just about the person.”

Helen Mirren

However, if there is one woman who could pull it off, Darvil believes it is Mirren:

“I’d love to see Dame Helen do it – best of luck to whoever gets it, though.”

The actor, who recently starred in the hit ITV mystery drama Broadchurch, went on to reveal that he thought that Matt Smith had been considering stepping down from the role for some time:

“He’s done his time on it, I think. It’s a hard one. You know, I left a year ago, and it was very hard to leave. I think the worst that you can do on something like that is outstay your welcome.

“It’s better to be missed than for people to go, ‘Just get out’, so I think it’s a good time for him to leave.”
